SO as many of you already know I graduated from Watertown High in June. As of September4th I have been attending Regis College and am planning on majoring in Nursing. Even thou this site was created for the student of Watertown High's Armenian class, I feel like I have the right to still be able to log on and share my story. Today(Sep 6) was my first official class day at Regis, I was able to find my friends and get to know my classes and my professors. To be hones I am looking forward to attend more classes and learn.
Regis college is an amazing, friendly, and known college. Although it is small in population but it is a great place to become friends with everyone, including your professors. Some college professors know you by number but here at Regis everyone knows you as Who you are. It is a great college. You have many soarces to get help from, whether its a friend, a tutor, or a professor. I would highly recommend Regis College because it is a wonderful place to continue education and a great place to have fun, and meat people.

My experience making this video was very difficult in the beginning until I got use to the software because I had never used any editing program before.

I enjoyed learning how to edit a video, I understand how music videos and other videos on Youtube.com are edited and how they come out really nice.

I didn't enjoy the frustration in the beginning remembering where to find effects and adding things I didn't know how to do.

From the making of this video I have leaned how to use a editing program because I never have and also it was my first time in front of the camera like that.

I can use these skills I learned on making more videos and editing more videos. Making this video helped me learn how Yerevan, Armenia is changing in many good ways.

1. My experience making this video was very complicated at times mainly because it is a new software and its a totally different experience than iMovie.

2.I enjoyed learning the new software and this movie making encouraged me to make videos at home too and also edit them.

3. Making this video was a great experience because it opened a video and gave me new interests.

4. I can see these skills fitting perfectly in my future because for college and other careers everything is more technological based and if I didn't it would be harder to learn in the future.

5. Making this video helped me learn about my heritage because I never took the time before to learn more about Aintab, and making this video I learned allot about where my family came from.

From making this video, I have learned quite a lot about my Armenian heritage. All the research I had done for this project helped me better understand how the Armenians have come to spread into many parts of the world and the reasons as to why. Also, what I found to be very interesting was the fact that this project made me find out the main reason why I am currently living in America.

During the making of this video. I have acquired the knowledge of many new techniques in which I can make better quality videos in a shorter time span using Final Cut Express HD. I enjoyed cutting out the bloopers out of the video; however it would have been nice to add them into the end of the video (to lighten up the mood). On the other hand, I didn't enjoy having to add too many pictures, sure they're nice and all, but too much can take away the point that you're trying to make; people start to look at the pictures instead of listening to what you have to say. If it was up to me, I would let the students of mine work on the project as they please, and if they had am opinion about something, I would take the time to consider it instead of having the video be the way that I want it.. after all, it is their video.

The making of this video was not easy, but it was not difficult. Halfway in between is more like it. It was something new for me to do, so it was done. So in a way it was fun to do something new, but purely because it was new. It was a new experience, therefore interesting, but it wasn't didn't really capture my interests, it simply isn't something that I'd like to constantly do. So, aside from that, I suppose that it wasn't too bad. Gradually though the more I learned about the program the more i was able to do. Also I learned a little something on video editing while learning a bit of famous Armenians and Armenian-Americans, because I had to research all of that in order to do this project. Yes, I learned a good deal of things, but I'm really not sure how much of it will be useful to me in the future, so I guess this project's uses will last me until the end of this class, but at least it will do something at all.

My Video Reflection: Armenian Migration

I really enjoyed making this video and the entire process. I admit that it was a struggle to continue editing for such a long period of time. The editing process was very difficult at first, because I had never used Final Cut before. However, now I feel more comfortable using this software program. My favorite part of the process was adding transitions and importing pictures and videos. This was not only the easiest part of the process, but they were also the most fun to do. I enjoyed it because I was able to add unique transitions and pictures to improve my video and make it look better. However, there were also some things I didn't really enjoy. For example, my least favorite part of making this video was key-framing. I struggled with this process a lot. Even though by the end, I was able to successfully add key-framing it took a long time to accomplish for me. I learned a lot by making this video. I learned more about the editing process, and now I feel like I have a better understanding of media. The skills gained making this video include editing, making a DVD, and even being able to speak well publicly. Overall, this video helped me to understand more about my Armenian heritage, because I was able to learn more about Armenian migration and their reasons for coming to the United States.

While making this video i learned how hard it is too make a video from when you start the script all the way too actually recoding it and editing it. One thing that I had enjoyed about the process was when I was recording. Recording my video was a different experience, also one thing that I learned from this project is how to edit video's, and how too create a DVD. I think this is positive experience because i could probably use this knowledge to get into a better college, or even a better job so this might have opened up more doors for my future. This project also helped me learn about my Armenian heritage by my searching up things I didn't know such as that about 90% of apricots distributed to the U.S.A. are from Malatya. Almost as everything everything has its down sides such as one thing I was not good at was the editing which had taken me awhile.

My Video Reflection: The Journey to Marash

My experience making this video was fun. Overall I had a blast making it. At first I thought it would be boring, and I would dread making it, but as I started to search for pictures of Marash, I realized this is not as bad as a I assumed it would be. I enjoyed the filming of my video. I never knew filming yourself can be fun. I have never been in a studio before where there are so many machines. I thought it was very cool to learn about different machines in a studio. I did not really like how it took a while to finish, and we had to actually make a script. It was a good technique to make a script, but I just don't like making things like that. I learned how to pan and zoom in on final cut express. I have never really used a video editing tool before. I thought it was interesting to learn new things. If I'm ever making a video in the future, I know what to do. I know how to zoom, and pan pictures and videos. I know how to add different effects to make a video seem more enjoyable than it already is. I learned new things about Marash that I did not know before. Making this video, I learned that Marash is famous for ice cream and shalab.

I had a relatively negative experience making this video. I am not particularly skilled at the media aspect of this class and, unfortunately, I think this shows in the final video. However, that is not to say I didn't enjoy the project at times. I found learning how to edit was not as difficult as I imagined it to be. Final Cut Express's controls were relatively simple and even thought it could be confusing at times, after I was properly educated in it's use by Ms. V, I believed I have learned all that I need about it.

Although the aim of the project (and even the name of my video) was to learn more about my Armenian heritage and lineage, I found that I was just rehashing the knowledge that I already had about my family and that I did not really learn anything new about the Armenian side of my family.

I enjoyed putting effects on this video but what I didn't enjoy is writing in English what I'm saying. I learned lot of things while I'm making this video. I never used final cut express but now I know how to use it. in the future I can use those skills that I learned to make videos.

Many families lost their Chickens!

Resident of Shaghat village of Sisyan region Armenuhi Khachatryan's said that her chickens have been placed in the refrigerator instead of the coop. With the chickens undergoing stomachache many die and their meet is not good for the villagers. Mrs. Khachatryan states that instead of letting the chickens die she has killed them instead. There is not a home in Shaghat that hasn't suffered damages. Villagers say bird meat is useless after it dies. Now villagers are keeping their eyes on the chicken coops to see if the chickens are ill so they can kill them early to be able to eat the meat.

Russian Based Armenian Buisness promises 8 million dollars to the Armenia Hayasan fund

The President of Armenia attended a dinner for the Armenia Hayastan fund in Moscow and 150 Russian-based Armenia Entrepreneurs promised 8 million dollars to be given to the fund. This money can be used to restore water irrigation systems in Artsakh. This is good because it was vital to the area and those who live in that area.

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad thinks that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement is possible through negotiations, justice and mutual respect.

"The peoples of the region must live in peace and friendship." We are neighbors and cannot ignore our neighborhood. This is geography and history. If we try to resolve own problems fairly and friendly, solutions will be found to all problems,” Ahmadinejad said in an interview with Lider Azerbaijani.

“We repeatedly stated that Iran is willing to assist resolution of the conflict. We think the regional problems must be settled by the countries of the region. The interference of foreigners can escalate the conflict. Let the negotiations be continued and maybe a solution will be found with the help of God,” he said.

I think he is right, the war should stop because we are neighbors and we have been neighbors for a long time. if we support each other we can be good and strong countries.

Armenian Zaven Andriasyan has tied the first game with Artyom Timofeev, a well know Russian chess master. In the 2010 Cup of Russia, two classic games are played, and with one ending in a tie, a victory in the next match could decide the victor of the cup. Andriasyan defeated Vladmir Potkin in the semi-finals to advance to the finals.

False bomb alert

"Yesterday evening the Armenian Rescue Service received an alarm about a bomb placed in the hall of public council at the Ministry of Defense".

"Later in the day, the service police reported the alarm as a hoax. Rescuers found no explosive device hidden in the vicinity of the Ministry".

If there was a bomb place at the Ministry of Defense, I wonder who and why someone would do such thing to Armenia.

Only 18% of Armenian Community in Istanbul know Armenian?!

Turkologist Ruben Melkonyan said that the Armenian community of Turkey faces numerous problems, including education. Around 47 Armenian schools operated in Istanbul during the 1970's. There are about 16 Armenian Schools in Istanbul today with 3,000 students. In the Armenian School, they do not learn about Armenian history. The Turkish policy is that, teachers should be only teaching Turkish history and language. Melkonyan, visited many of these Armenian schools, and he asked the students why they do not speak Armenian in Armenian schools. The students replied saying that it's not allowed and many of the teachers don't speak it, so why should they?. Only 18% of the Armenian community of Istanbul knows the Armenian language and uses it.

I just think it's really sad that only 18% Armenians actually know the language. That is horrible. I just assumed that people in Istanbul, Turkey would know about the Armenian Culture, and Language then other European countries. I was just shocked, that the percentage was low. If it was about 50-60% it would have been better because that would be more than half of Istanbul.

The Disabled Being Neglected?

"Disabled people are neglected in Armenia. Wherever they go, they receive a negative answer. No one but their parents seems to care for them."

This was said by Nvard Mirzoyan, Chairwoman of "Mariam", an NGO seeking to help the disabled. NGOs "Mariam" and "Zeitun" have over 500 children registered, but in Armenia there are over 180,000 disabled people, 115,278 of whom are under 18 years old.

Currently, the government gives out pensions of anywhere between 8,000 and 11,200 AMD to disabled people. However, the Chairwoman of Zeitun NGO Zina Asatyran says this is not sufficient, as "(the disabled) cannot even buy medicine with the money." Both NGOs have appealed to businessmen and the government for assistance but have received no help. Asatyran said she has always "supported the authorities, thinking that they implement right policy" but that she understands "I have been wrong."

Armenian Class

I think period 2 Armenian is a great class. It is really fun and you get to learn about Armenia and how to use computers. Also you get to meet other Armenians you never knew. However it is possible that this class could be better. Perhaps if we get to listen to music or have some free computer time it should make it a lot more fun. Anyways this was a fun class and do look forward to taking it again.

Vanes Martirosyan: Undefeated

An amateur boxer, Vanes Martirosyan, is 28-0 with 17 KO's. Pretty incredible, but a Cuban boxer has called him out. He said:

“I’ve proven myself, especially this year. Now I want to let Vanes and fans around the world know that when you talk and my name comes out of your mouth, you better be ready to back it up. If Vanes spent as much time in the gym as he did on the Internet talking about real fighters, he might have been a world champion by now.”

So Vanes had something to say back to him:

"Lara is making me shake in my boots (said in a mocking tone). Didn't I make it clear that I want to fight top 10 guys? I'm done with amateurs. I don't want to be involved in his little American dream bullsh*t."

"Lara needs to get off my nuts. I'm not his golden ticket. I said I want champions or top rated guys. Lara can go get a belt then we can talk," he said.

Israel is a major threat to Turkey?!

The Turkish National Security made some changes in a document which contains threats against Turkey claiming that Israel is now a major threat to the country. Israel is now defined as a "major threat" in the document called Red Book. The Turkish National Security removed Syria, Bulgaria, Georgia and Armenia from the list of countries that pose a threat to Turkey. Greece still posses a threat against Turkey.

Got cheese?

Because of the price of cheese increasing in Yerevan markets, sellers in Kapan refused to sell cheese for several days, saying that they either did not have cheese or tried to charge a large sum for it. One saleswoman said "the cheese price will continue increasing as it went up by 20% in a day" and that they expect prices to increase further. The Minister of Agriculture, Gerasim Alaverdyan, said that the increasing price of cheese is "caused by the demand. Large-scale farmers today sell a liter of milk for AMD 160" and that the prices would decrease in April or May.

Armenian Church in Turkey Holds Mass Again After Many Years

For the past 30 years the Saint Kirakos Armenian church in Diarbekir, Turkey did not hold mass nor offer any prayers. However, last sunday the church held mass under Archbishop Aram Ateshian to the numerous Armenians that came from all over Europe, Syria, and Turkey.

The Mayor of Diarbekir Osman Baydemir welcomed everyone that came, and said that Diarbekir was their town as well as it is his. This showed he wanted to promote the development, and the improvement of relations with the Armenians.

Between the years of 1915 to 1960 the Saint Kirakos Church was used as storage of arms. It later became a bank office, and nobody thought it would ever hold mass again. After, many years the church was in poor condition since the 16th century, but starting last year it finished being rebuilt. It cost about $2.5 million with 70% of the money raised by Armenians living in Istanbul, Turkey & the other 30% came from the Diarbekir Municipality.

A chairman of St. Kirakos Church Fund hoped for having a holy mass and offering prayers at least once or twice a year after the reconstruction was done.

Before 1915, Diarbekir was 1 out of 6 provinces of Western Armenia, and its territory of 37,000 km was larger than the territory of the Republic of Armenia that had a population of 260,000 while 105,000 of the population were Armenian. Today it is a Kurdish town, but has very little population of Armenian, Turks, or even Assyrians.

Many Turkish nationalists including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan do not support this process.

Over 34 instances of ceasefire violation were reported along the line of contact between NKR and Azerbaijani armed forces on the night of October 24 and during daytime.

Azerbaijan fired 578 shots in the direction of Hadrut, Martuni, Askeran and Martakert from different types of weapon, NKR MoD press service reports.

No Tobacco Day

Since 2009, October 12th has been observed in Armenia as National “No Tobacco” Day.This program is being implemented with support from the American Cancer Society, UK Cancer Research, and the Framework Convention Alliance. Most often, the smoking ban was violated by citizens in state and educational institutions, 71.46% and 70.9%, correspondingly.

According to information from the Center for Health Services Research and Development of the AUA

the results of the current monitoring program in Yerevan suggest that serious problems exist in the implementation of tobacco control policy.

Requiring appropriate solutions to protect all citizens of the RA from exposure to secondhand smoke at worksites and public places.The "No Tobacco" day is a great way to help people to stop smoking and realize what there doing.

"We're working on that. Bika is definitely interested in doing the fight," Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, Bika's co-promoter, told ESPN.com. "It's not done, but it's being worked on."

I myself, personally would not take myself out of a fight unless I was on the verge of dying but now this gives Bika a chance to step in and show people what he's about.

President of the Republic of Slovenia visits Armenia

On October 12, 2010 the farewell ceremony for President of the Republic of Slovenia, Danilo Tyirk was held today at the RA presidential residence. President Danilo Tyirk was in Armenia on an official visit. Tyirk had agreed to sign the documents were Armenian can travel easily to the European Nations for visits and etc.

Before the farewell ceremony, the two heads of state held private talks to sum up the results of the visit.

President Tyirk and the delegates visited the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin where they were greeted by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians. They also visited the Depository and the Mother Temple. They have also visited the Armenian Genocide Monument where Tyirk has placed many flowers around the fire. The President of Slovenia and the accompanying delegation ended their official visit and left Yerevan.

Serbian director Emir Kusturica has reminded Turkish director Semih Kaplanoglu, a man who is supposedly very against war crimes against humanity, about the Armenian Genocide, saying: “If Kaplanoglu is so sensitive to genocides, why wouldn’t he speak of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated in World War I years?" it is very nice to see important celebrity figures in the east European and Angolan area are aware of the Genocide, and are aware that people in Turkey who are so "against" genocide should recognize the one their old government once perpetrated.

Armenia beats Andorra 4:0

Armenia claimed its second win in Euro 2012 qualifying Group B with an impressive victory over Andorra (4:0) in Yerevan.Gevorg Chazaryan,Henrik Mkhitaryan and Yura Movsisyan put the home side 3-0 up after 33 minutes and Brazilian-born Marcos Pizzelli added the forth one shortly after the break, as the Armenians followed 3-1 victory over Slovakia with another win..

In my opinion this is a huge victory for Armenia and this means that Armenia has a chance to qualify for the 2012 campaign. Armenia has long awaited to be what they currently are and the president of Armenia was also in attendance at this game.

Teacher Uses Violence in School?!

I'm shocked that this happened, because no teacher should lay a hand on a student. Using violence towards students has no positive result.

Minors going to Venereologists in Armenia!

Over the past five years, the number of people afflicted with STD's in Armenia ha grown to around 10,000. Even as the reporting was taking place, more people were diagnosed with an STD. Venereologist Gurgen Pursughyan says that people in his profession are trying to "prevent the spread of genital infections.", and are also "engaged in disease prevention". Over the past few years, the number of teenagers seeking medical attention for STD's has grown. However, a good aspect of this is the attitude of most Armenians towards people with STD's. Pursughyan says "Today the attitude to venereal diseases has changed. If earlier infected people were locked and isolated, today everyone is free to choose his doctor and receive treatment."

This Bible has been kept in the archives of the Madenataran museum, Soorp Amenaprgeech Church, and the Soorp Garmravor Church for a full 200 years. This October 9th though, this old artifact was taken out of the archives to be presented on display during the Holy Mass, in armenian the Holy Badarak. This Holy Badarak though was very different as it took place at the 1st Armenian Church, Holy Etchmiadzin where the public were allowed not only to observe this old handwritten Bible, but touch it also to receive their blessings.

Azerbaijan Occupies 15% of Karabahk

Between October 4-14, the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair will conduct a field assessment mission in the territories around Nagorno-Karabakh. Both the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) experts have been invited to participate in the mission.

Masis Mayilyan, President of NKR Public Council on Foreign Policy and Security, says the mission is not to be allowed for Artsakh as it is initiated by Baku.

"The mission would yield positive results if it were initiated by Armenia, Artsakh and Azerbaijan. However, since it was initiated by Baku, the results will be used by Azerbaijan solely for propaganda purposes. This is also evidenced of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's speech at the UN GA session," Mr. Mayilyan told A1+.

For Armenia, it is imperative that the mission participants visit the regions of Shahumyan, Martakert and Martuni, which are still occupied by Azerbaijan.

"This is an area of 1000 square kilometers. We must at least preserve the balance and show the world that 15% of Karabakh territory is still occupied by Azerbaijan," he said.

Lost on a Mountain!

In an unfortunate event, a group of tourists got lost on Mount Azhdahak on September 25.

At 2:00 a.m. the group members Avag Hakobyan and Hasmik Manandyan got to the village of Dzoraghjugh and told the headman about the whereabouts of the group and that they were lost.

On September 26, the other nine members of the group were found near "Shoghan Aghbyur" luckily and transported to Martuni town.

“Being a small country with domestic tensions, Armenia can’t help resolution of the problem. So, Iran or Russia will hardly resort to Yerevan’s assistance,” Sevak Sarukhanyan, deputy head of Noravank center, told reporters on September 27.

Asked whether the sale of S-300 missiles to Azerbaijan might be aimed against Iran, he said the missiles can’t alter the military balance in the region.

“Iran will always be the dominating force in the region,” Sarukhanyan said, adding that Iran is an unreliable ally for Armenia.

He also noted that Tehran doesn’t interfere in Karabakh talks, since any meddling in the process conflicts with the country’s principles.

Russia extends humanitarian aid to Armenia

Tigran G. Martirosyan Becomes World Weight Lifting Champ

Armenia's Tigran G. Martirosyan (77kg) won the world's champion title in the World Weightlifting Championship that happen recently in Antalya, Turkey.

The athlete Martirosyan won a gold medal lifting 173kg in the category called "snatch." China's Xiaojun Lu came in second with a result of 170 kg, followed by Iran's Kianush Rostami with 161kg.

In the category called "jerk," Tigran lifted 200kg and became the world champion. Xiaojun Lu took a small gold in jerk.

Armenia's Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian with the full support of the country hoped

to make the relations with Turkey better without any preconditions. On September 25, 2010

at the UN's General Assembly, Edward Nalbandian mentioned the signing of the protocol

last year after many complications. Until today the border between Armenia and Turkey

remains the only border in all of Europe that is still closed. However, at the time Turkey

still does not agree with the ratification, and wants the  language of the initial preconditions which said that

Armenia was the one that needed to forgive the Turks and move on. The Armenians wanted the

border open to have better relations with Turkey and for easier & more efficient trade.

Whereas, Turkey still wants to keep the same relations without any preconditions of the

protocols. In conclusion, even thought the protocol was signed last year the border still

remains closed between Armenia and Turkey.

“With reconstructing Armenian churches, Turkey just tries to please Europe and recover economy in its eastern provinces,” Christine Melkonyan, research fellow of the Department of Turkey at the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, told a news conference in Yerevan.

For his part, historian Ashot Hayruni said that the Armenian community of Turkey offered authorities to reconstruct St. Kirakos church in Diarbekir.

“If Turkey reconstructs Armenian churches in compliance with Armenian architecture norms, it will be welcome. Opening of St. Kirakos will help islamized Armenians return to Christianity,” he said.

This article explains the events that took place between Armenia and Russia in order for the Armenians to gain their Independence.

"In January 1991, the Armenian Supreme Soviet decided not to participate in Gorbachev's planned referendum on preserving the Soviet Union. In March the parliament announced that, instead, the republic would hold its own referendum in September, in compliance with the procedure outlined in the Soviet constitution for a republic to secede. Although literal compliance would mean that Armenia would not be fully independent for five years after the referendum, Moscow soon moved to change Armenia's course. Without notifying the Armenian government, Moscow sent paratroopers to the republic in early May, ostensibly to protect Soviet defense installations in Armenia. Ter-Petrosian's official statement in reaction characterized the move as a virtual declaration of war by the Soviet Union.

In August 1991, when a self-proclaimed emergency committee attempted to overthrow Gorbachev and take control in Moscow, the Armenian government refused to sanction its actions. Fearing an extension of the Soviet incursion of May, Ter-Petrosian approached the Moscow coup very cautiously. The republic's Defense Committee secretly resolved to have the Armenian armed forces go underground and wage guerrilla warfare. Ter-Petrosian, who believed that Gorbachev's personal blunders, indecisiveness, and concessions to conservative communists were to blame for the coup, was overjoyed when the conservatives were defeated. But the coup itself convinced Armenians of the need to move out of the Soviet Union as rapidly as possible, and it validated TerPetrosian 's refusal to participate in the revival of the Soviet Union advocated by Gorbachev.

Within two months of the coup, Armenians went to the polls twice. In September 1991, over 99 percent of voters approved the republic's commitment to independence. The immediate aftermath of that vote was the Armenian Supreme Soviet's declaration of full independence, on September 23, in disregard of the constitution's restraints on secession. Then in October, Ter-Petrosian was elected overwhelmingly as president of the republic. He now had a popular mandate to carry out his vision of Armenian independence and self-sufficiency.

As political changes occurred within the republic, armed conflict continued in Nagorno-Karabakh during 1991. Armenia officially denied supporting the "Nagorno-Karabakh defense forces" that were pushing Azerbaijani forces out of the region; Armenia also accused the Soviet Union of supporting Azerbaijan as punishment for Armenia's failure to sign Gorbachev's new Union Treaty. In turn, Azerbaijan called Armenia an aggressor state whose national policy included annexation of Azerbaijani territory."

On September 21st, 2010 , the country's leadership and thousands of citizens laid flowers at the military pantheon, Yerablur.
The President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan held a reception, where representatives of culture, society and the military were given trophies and medals for their contributions to the establishment of Armenian statehood.
on this date, there are mass celebrations all over the country. Streets are full of people everywhere, waving the Armenian flag. Youth organizations are planning a peaceful march. A concert will take place in Republic Square in downtown Yerevan. The day will conclude with celebratory fireworks.

This year the Armenian government made the decision to declare 20-21 September non-working days.
The Declaration of Independence was adopted at the first session of the Supreme Council of Armenia on August 23, 1990. This document abolished the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic and proclaimed the independent Republic of Armenia.

The decision of the Supreme Council of Armenia on September 21, 1991 held a referendum on secession from the USSR and the establishment of independent statehood. most of the citizens of the Republic, voted for this decision.

Two days later, the Supreme Council proclaimed independence, and made Armenia a independent state.

Boston Celebrates Armenian Independence

Last Saturday night, September 18th at 9:00 pm Boston celebrated the Armenian Independence Day. It was the second annual celebration held in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was organized and held by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Armenian society, Harvard Armenian Society, and the Armenian Association for Academic Partnership and Support (ARMACLAD). The cost was only $5, but if you represented your armenian colors of red, blue, and orange then you can pay less for the entrance fee. Also, even though the actual date of the Armenian Independence Day is September 21, 1991, it was celebrated on the 18th. Everyone from all nations was invited, even many representatives went, to enjoy the Armenian dances, foods, drinks, and activities throughout the night. This year was the 19th year that Armenia was free from the Soviet Union, and became the Republic of Armenia. Next year we hope that the celebrations will continue and more people attend the gathering.

Car accident on Spitak-Yerevan highway

The driver-resident of Yerevan Edik Avetisyan (born in 1958)-and passengers-residents of Yerevan Nune Avetisyan (born in 1964), Khachik Potsinyan (born in 1960) and David Potsinyan (born in 1997)-received physical injuries of different degrees and were transferred to Spitak-Yerevan city hospital. On April 24 in Istanbul, four events commemorating the 95th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide were held—including three held outside, in public, all while obstacles, counter protests, and fascist rhetoric tried to disrupt the commemorations, and reminded the few hundred participants of the long way ahead.

At 7 p.m., a candlelight vigil was held in Taksim Square in the presence of hundreds of policemen and a large crowd of reporters and onlookers. Organized by Turkish intellectuals, the vigil was the most advertised of the commemoration events that day, and attracted the largest number of participants and counter-demonstrators. The organizers read a statement about April 24, 1915, saying that this was their pain as well. Then, for almost half an hour, the participants in the vigil sat in silence while counter protestors nearby, pushed back by the police yelled, “Death to the Armenian Diaspora.”

Armenian Genocide Bill Again on Israel Parliament Agenda

The Knesset decided by 12 votes to 8, with one abstention, that one of its standing committees will discuss the resolution and determine whether it should be put to a full parliament vote. Significantly, a representative of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also backed a parliament debate on the bill drafted by Haim Oron, the leader of the left-wing opposition Meretz Party. “It is appropriate that the Israeli Knesset, which represents the Jewish people, recognize the Armenian Genocide,” said Oron. “It is unacceptable that the Jewish people is not making itself heard.” The Defense Committee did not even vote on the Armenian Genocide resolutions in the past, despite clearance from the Knesset. Armenian Genocide Conference Held In Ankara

On April 24th, two genocide commemoration events took place in Istanbul. They took place one after the other and in different locations around the city. The conference, which was organized by the Ankara Freedom of Thought Initiative, was heavily controlled by the police. The hotel was searched by both policemen and security dogs, metal detectors were set up at the entrance of the Princess Hotel(where the conference took place), and all attendees had to be cleared before they were allowed into the building.

Around 200 people attended the conference, the majority of which were intellectuals and activists who condemn the Armenian Genocide and support recognition, and a debate on whether or not Armenia should seek reparations took place. The debate was headed by Ismail Besikci, a scholar who spent years in Turkish prisons for speaking about the Kurdish involvement in the Armenian Genocide, Baskin Oran, a professor of political science, Sevan Nishanian, a Turkish-Armenian scholar who has written several books, Ragip Zarakolu, a publisher in Turkey who has been at the forefront of the struggle for Armenian Genocide recognition in Turkey for decades, and various others.

Considering that this year 2010 marks the 95th anniversary of the Armenian genocide of 1915 and the fact that the act of recognition of this genocide contributes to respect for human dignity and constitutes an act of prevention of crimes against humanity. They call upon all members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to take the necessary steps for the recognition of the genocide perpetrated against Armenians in the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. U.S. Congress Insults Feelings of Turkey

A resolution approved by the House Foreign Affairs Committee last week, in recognizing the Armenian Genocide, asks the Obama administration to endorse history, with the risk of insulting their ally. With Turkey's importance to the U.S. , that will be hard to do, and the U.S. may lose Turkey as an ally.

“The passing of House Resolution 252 introduces a new dynamic into the State Department’s hopes for “normalization” of relations between Armenia and Turkey. The Armenian Genocide is marked as beginning April 24, 1915. On the 94th anniversary last year, President Obama decried the “great atrocities” – but defied his own campaign promise by following the precedent of other modern presidents and stopping short of using the word “genocide.” said John Hughes.

In my opinion, I think no matter what the U.S. should recognize the genocide. The U.S. has other allies around the world and since this resolution was passed, there must be hope somewhere in these people's hearts to recognize the genocide and that it is not a lie.

On Thurs., March 4, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing on the Armenian Genocide Resolution. The resolution passed by a vote of 23 to 22. The resolution will now be sent to the House of Representatives for a vote by the full chamber at a date to be set by the Speaker of the House.
In his introductory remarks, Howard L. Berman (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, underlined the undisputed fact of the Armenian Genocide, noted that the overwhelming majority of scholars affirm the fact of the genocide, and urged his colleagues for vote for it. He added, “It is now time for Turkey to acknowledge the reality of the Armenian Genocide.”

Turkey says it is recalling its ambassador to the U.S. for consultations following a resolution declaring the killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks around the time of World War I as genocide, reported AP. The move came minutes after the U.S. congressional panel approved the resolution Thursday. A government statement said Ambassador Namik Tan was being recalled with immediate effect. The House Foreign Affairs Committee endorsed the resolution with a 23-22 vote, even though the Obama Administration had urged Congress not to offend Turkey by approving it.

A bi-partisan majority today rejected Turkey’s gag rule, setting the stage for Speaker Pelosi and the full U.S. House to properly commemorate the Armenian Genocide. The Committee’s message was simple yet powerful: Turkey doesn’t get a vote or a veto in the U.S. Congress.

As Americans of Armenian heritage, it holds great meaning to see our nation move one step closer to putting the painful lessons of the Armenian Genocide to work in helping to end the cycle of genocide, in Darfur and around the world.

This summer, citizens of Yerevan will most probably pay 206 drams for 1 cubic meter of water instead of the previous 181 drams.

Trade director of "Yerevan Water" Company Gagik Margaryan informed that the company had appealed to the Public Services Regulatory Commission to increase the price for water supply and disposal by 25 drams, but the appeal will be examined in May. If the appeal is upheld, water prices will be increased by 14 percent.

In my experience not many Armenian houses receive water and there is absolutely no reason to increase the water prices. If every house received water then it would have been fine to increase water pricing.

Earthquake Strikes Turkey!!

A magnitude 6 earthquake has struck Turkey at 4:32 a.m. The earthquake killed 57 people as it knocked down stone or mud brick houses, the earthquake passed through six villages. About 100 ther people were injured in affect of the earthquake, the quake struck 550 kilometers east of the capital city Ankara. The quake which struck at at 4:32 caught many people a they were asleep, it was followed by 30 aftershocks.

Armenia helps Haiti

Over the past few weeks, Armenia has raised over $2000 to help Haiti. The money was collected through an SMS contribution, in which people send text messages in order to donate money. The money was collected by the Armenian Red Cross. Anna Eghiazaryan, Secretary General of the Armenian Red Cross, says Armenia couldn't stay indifferent to Haitians. "Our help is both material and moral. Our people should help Haiti with all possible means," she said. The number of victims totaled from the earthquake is roughly 200,000.

Brawl in the Skies

A fight broke out in an aircraft cabin on a Moscow-Yerevan flight. While what caused the altercation is not certain, the fight that ensued was heated. According to stewardess Natalia Sh., one passenger, Sergei Vandanyan, struck another passenger, Karen Grigoryan, over the head with a bottle. The police would give no other information other than that an "investigation is underway"

Who Will Represent Armenian in This Year's Eurovision Song Contest 2010?

On February 14, 2010 during the semi- finals of Eurovision Song Contest, this took place in the National Opera Theatre in Yerevan and was broadcast live, it was Armenian's turn to chose a representative. The main focuses were Eva Rivas, and Mihran and Emmy. As the performances were going on, there was SMS text voting, to have the winner chosen by the end of the night. Eva’s victory is contested by some who believe the results were rigged. Nadezhda Sargsyan, the mother of Emmy, has threatened to take the matter to court. Sargsyan claims that soon after the 15-minute SMS voting started, some names were blocked. As Eva received 5,000 votes, where as Mehran and Emmy as a duo got 1,400. During a press conference on Feb. 20, Nadezhda Sargsyan claimed that ARMTV’s chairman, Alexan Harutyunyan, had reassured her that Emmy and Mihran would “definitely” represent Armenia at Eurovision.
As if that wasn't enough controversy for the winner, Eva and the song- writer, Moscow-based Karen Kavaleryan, and music by Armen Martirosyan have other problems heading their way. The Turkish composer Yagoub Mutlu, who was present at Armenia’s national finals, has accused “Apricot Stone” of having a clear political message. He believes that the first line of the song refer to the Armenian Genocide, and believes that the term “motherland” refers to Turkish territories, while the rest of the song is a clear message directed at Turkey. The writer Karen Kavaleryan, an experienced Russian-Armenian lyricist familiar with the Eurovision Contest world and their rules. Rivas’ public relations manager, Hayk Markosyan has told ArmeniaNow that “the song has nothing to do with the Armenian Genocide, and it does not have a political context. The song simply presents the Armenian culture, the Armenian traditions, the apricot, which is just an Armenian fruit and it is the symbol of Armenia, and the thoughts of a young Armenian woman who lived far from the homeland for years.”

Ani Serebrakian Represents Armenia in the Olymipics

The evening of February 15, 2010 , the Armenian entry for the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest was selected in a national final out of nine contenders. Eva Rivas became the winner of the Armenian selection tour and will represent Armenia at Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo with her song Apricot Stone. The selection among 9 candidates was based on SMS-voting and jury decision. The Armenian final was broadcast live from the National Opera Theatre in Yerevan on Sunday evening and featured Another Story Rock -band, Ani Arzumanyan, Meline Beglaryan, Emmy & Mihran, Davit Ashotyan, Nick Egibyan, Maria Kizirian, Razmik Amyan and Eva Rivas. 22 years old Eva Rivas and her song "Apricot stone" got the largest number of TV viewer's votes. After the results of the vote were publicized Eva Rivas got excited and thanked her team and audience. During this year's Eurovision contest, Armenia will be participating in the second semi-final, which will take place on May 27. Also competing on that day are Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Switzerland, Lithuania, Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Cyprus, Romania and Israel.

Greek and Armenian Specialty

Have you ever tried and Armenian and Greek dish? Well try making Dolma, which is stuffed grape leaves.

Ingredients

3 cups uncooked white rice
1 teaspoon minced fresh parsley
1 pound ground beef
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon curry powder (optional)
1 (16 ounce) jar grape leaves, drained and rinsed
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 potato, sliced into rounds
1 cup canned tomato sauce
2 cups water, or as needed

Directions

In a medium bowl, mix together the uncooked rice, ground beef, parsley, allspice, pepper and curry powder until well blended.
Pour oil into the bottom of a large pot, and spread to cover. Make a layer of potato slices to cover the bottom of the pan. The dolmas should not be able to touch the bottom of the pan.
Lay the grape leaves out flat on a cutting board. Place about a tablespoon of the beef mixture in the center of one leaf. Fold sides in towards the center, then roll up from the bottom loosely. Set in the pot seam side down. Repeat with the remaining mixture and leaves. For large leaves, you may cut them in half at the center vein. Place a heavy dinner plate on top of the dolma to keep them from unraveling. The cooking pot should be about 2/3 full.
Pour tomato sauce and water over the dolma. The liquid should cover them by at least one inch. Adjust the amount of water if necessary. Bring to a boil, then cover, and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until all liquid has been absorbed and rice is tender.

How To Make Armenian Cheese Bureg

Cheese Bureg is one of my favorite Armenian dishes. It's mostly an appetizer but I always eat enough to fill me up!

INGRDIENTS:

Purchase fillo dough at your supermarket.
1/4 pound, or more,  butter melted,  or better yet rendered.
You need 6 sheets plus 3 sheets of fillo dough the size of the pan you are using

FILLING:
1 1/2 lbs. Jack cheese,  or ricotta,  or Armenian (Feta) cheese. Mix or take your choice.
Feta is the most authentic. I like to mix feta and jack cheese.
1/2 cup chopped Armenian or Italian parsley,  Flat leafed
2 eggs [beaten well]
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
Mix the above ingredients for the filling

1.) Butter your cake pan well and lay in a sheet of fillo,  and butter the top.
2.) Put on a layer of filling.
3.) Add another fillo and butter the top and add more filling.
4.) Do this until all six sheets of fillo are used and your filling is used up.
5.) You can now add the last three sheets of fillo making sure to butter each one.

Bake in a 450 degree oven for 20 minutes.
Lower the heat to 300 degrees and bake another 20 minutes.
The time is not as important as tshe color of your fillo dough.
Make sure it is a golden brown.
Take out the sou-berag and let cool for 5 minutes.
Cut in diagonals or squares and serve warm.

Ingredients

1 cup water
1 cup fine cracked wheat
1 cup minced fresh parsley leaves
1/2 cup minced fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup finely chopped yellow onion
3 tomatoes, diced
2 cucumbers, seeded and diced
3 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons lemon juice, or to taste
1 teaspoons sea salt

Directions

In a large mixing bowl, pour the water over the cracked wheat and cover, let stand about 20 minutes until wheat is tender and water is absorbed. Add the chopped herbs and vegetables and toss with the mix. Combine the oil, lemon juice, and salt in a separate bowl. Add to wheat mixture and mix well. Chill. Serve and enjoy.

Armenians give a helping hand to Haiti

It has been three weeks since Haiti was struck with a devastating earthquake, killing nearly 200,000 people. Shortly after the news about the earthquake reached Armenia, the Armenian Rescue Service decided to help and send out a strong team of helpers, search dogs and special equipment to Haiti. However, a few days after the announcement, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said, “Unfortunately we could not carry out the mission because Haiti was not prepared to receive the team and there were numerous problems with logistics and aid coordination… International structures told us that there are problems with physically shipping things and that financial assistance would be more expedient.”

I think it's a good cause and mission for Armenia to help Haiti. Haiti helped Armenia during the time of it's earthquake back in 1988, so it's nice of Armenia to give back.

Armenian Christmas is known to be celebrated on January 6th. Instead of staying home and going to church, I decided to come to school. In Armenian class, we painted initials of our name that our teacher Digin Seta made herself. These weren't any regular letters, they were bird writings, which is known as Tchnakir in Armenian. Each letter is made up by a bird in the shape of the Armenian letter. After, we had some cake Digin Seta had brought in. When I went home and showed the painting to my mom and dad, they loved it and they immediately knew what the painting was. They seemed so proud of me, and my dad even framed the painting, which showed how much he cared.

My Armenian Christmas was very enjoyable. Lots of friend and family gathering together to celebrate. On the actual day of Christmas I stayed home because it is a very important religious holiday for all Armenians. I went to church with my mother and younger brother and we prayed as we always do on Armenian Christmas. The day before though on Christmas Eve is usually when my family gathers in one of my relatives house's and we have a large table with Armenian foods and deserts of various kinds set for us to eat and enjoy the Christmas holiday together.

January 6th is the day that most Armenian's celebrate Christmas. It usually is not as much of a big deal as December 25th, however us Armenian's still enjoy it. In order to celebrate the holiday usually Armenian's go to church and then later on at night have a joyful and delicious dinner with their families. This is exactly what I did. I love going to church anyway, in fact, I teach Sunday School at my church to first graders and was also valedictorian of my own Sunday School class last year. It is a huge part of who I am, so being able to miss a day of school for it was just amazing!

Deceased soldier Tigran Ohanjanyan’s parents claim the case of their son’s death did not meet their demand for material evidence relating the case that has been presented in court and neglected results of a forensic examination. Tigran Ohanjanyan died on August 30, 2007, in a military unit, in the village of Karchaghbyur of the Gegharkunik region.

"According to the materials of the criminal case, at about 11:00 pm he left the military unit and was killed by electrocution when he touched a cable near a communications antenna." This conclusion was given by a forensic doctor Vigen Adamyan. After many studies if this criminal case and the findings of many doubtful facts, the parents of Tigran came to conclusion that their son was murdered.“How could my son have got killed by electricity of only 30 volts? If it was a case of electrocution, why were my child’s clothes torn into pieces, why did his teeth come out, why weren’t his shoe damaged in the part from where, according to them, the electricity went out,” says Tigran’s mother Gohar Sargsyan. Specialists say that 30 volts can not kill a human.
One of the lawyers Seda Safaryan says that there have been many other killinfs during that year of similar natures. I September 18 year old Aram Mkrtchyan at a military unit has been found dead. He has been bruttaly beaten by one of the officers Andok Gakstyan. Investigation of this case is still in progress and Andok Gakstyan is in costody.

My Christmas vacation was enjoyable. Christmas Day was all about my family being together and having a fun time. Out of respect for my mother, my brother and I thought it would be appropriate enough for us to cook the food. It was like a flashback to Thanksgiving because we made turkey in the oven, only because it seemed big enough to feed my whole family. We even had Armenian and Greek side dishes, like stuffed grape leaves, pilaf, lemony potatoes, feta cheese, and lahmejun, which is an Armenian like pizza. Christmas day related to my culture because the most important aspect of my two cultures is my family coming together, and the food is the second most important. Other than Christmas Day, the rest of my vacation was average, but I enjoyed it.

On December 25th I spent my Christmas with my family we ate different kinds of Armenian food. We ate hummus and mutabal. My family and I opened our presents on New Years instead of on Christmas. For Armenian Christmas we go to church and celebrate it there. We spent also a lot of time on calling relatives overseas wishing them a Merry Christmas. But my Christmas still has not come because we celebrate it on January 5th and 6th. Also on that day Armenian scouts come and sing us Armenian Christmas related songs.

This Christmas break was truly the best vacation I have had in a very long time. With so many things to do and so many family members to see my Christmas break was busy but enjoyable. My Christmas vacation contributed to my Armenian heritage in many ways, because the place I spent my whole vacation was in California. This is important mainly because the state of California has one of the worlds highest population of Armenians. I had many Armenian cultural experiences while I was there because the place I stayed was in Glendale, California.

This is the second most populated Armenian city in the state, this is also where I stayed with my family. Every morning I would wake up to many delicious Armenian breakfast foods. We ate many breads with cheese and ground peppers in them, and drank hot tea along with it all. These examples truly made it a wonderful experience.

I opened my presents on Christmas Eve because that's usually when my family cooks a large feast for the whole family to come and enjoy. There were also many Armenian stores and bakeries in some areas where the whole street was just owned by Armenians. This is my Armenian Christmas and I would love it very much if I could go back again next year. It was a great family experience and also a wonderful Armenian cultural experience.

This Christmas vacation, I incorporated some Armenian traditions into my normal celebrations. One of the Armenian traditions that I enjoyed doing this year was preparing some of the food that we had for Christmas and New Year's Eve, such as khadaif, with my grandmother. This ties into my Armenian heritage because it is a traditional Armenian dish and helping to prepare and cook it really gave me a sense of my Armenian culture. We also gave some gifts on New Years Eve, which is an Armenian tradition. This is better because on Christmas, the holiday is much more commercialized and materialistic. It also makes more sense to give gifts on New Years because it helps you focus more on the real aspect of the holiday: your family.

This year during my Christmas vacation, I got to spend time with my family. This time of year is always special to my family, because Christmas day is my mom's birthday, and New Year's Eve is my birthday. Every year we are invited to my cousin's house where we all get to talk and have a good time as a family, with her husband, being a great cook, preparing most of the night's dinner including, steak cooked with wine, and rice. The gathering is always a success because we have a Santa come and the kids always get excited to get their presents.

Then on Christmas day it was just my family and I at home, in front of the fireplace, spending quality time, and celebrating my mom's birthday. Although we don't open our presents until New Years Eve, Christmas day is a good day. Finally on New Years Eve it's been a tradition of my family that we will always spend it together, therefore my cousin, and uncle, from my dad's side are invited into our home, where my mom prepares all the food. Traditionally my mom makes, rice with mushroom, chicken, in the memory of my aunt who passed away seven years ago. She also makes sarma (grape leaves, with rice) ghavorma (shredded steak), pilav, and other Armenian food.

Although the Armenian Christmas is officially on January 5th, as the guests left, it was our time to open our presents, as an Armenian tradition. This year I got a Laptop, which I had picked myself! Then my sisters surprised me with the bag I had wanted, and with the wallet, and other good presents :)
